If you’re a surfer, there are a lot of reasons to love Portugal. The waves are amazing and they come in all shapes and sizes, for all levels of surfers. The crowds are minimal if you search a little, the standard of living is great and it turns out to also be a good location to be at if you are a pro surfer.
Find out the story of 6 pro surfers who moved to Portugal:
#1 – Gony Zubizarreta – 34 years old – From Vigo, Spain
Born in Argentina, Gony lived most of his life in Vigo, Spain, but often was driven south by his father to surf the point breaks of the South of Portugal. He’d also spend a lot of time in the south of Portugal, Algarve, with his close friend Marlon Lipke, training and surfing fun waves all over the south and west coasts. At a young age he picked a portuguese surfboard sponsor and by 25 years of age he’d bought a house in Ericeira and made it his base. Although he spends a lot of time traveling the world, on surf trips with his sponsors and competing on the World Surf League’s qualifying tour, he lists Ericeira, in Portugal, as his favorite place.
“I’ve been surfing in Ericeira since I was 15 years old. I fell in love with the waves of this town. Being sponsored by a local brand was key to be able to spend more time in this magical place and I ended up living here. You have everything you need to be happy. Great waves, great people, a high level of surfing, amazing restaurants, peace in the winter, party in the summer… and Lisbon is very close by. Perfect balance.”
